Bronwyn Thies-Thompson
Biography
Bronwyn Thies-Thompson is a musician and researcher, currently a doctoral student in religion at Concordia University in Montreal. Classically trained as a soprano, Bronwyn is recognized for their “clean and clear voice” and “natural and assured musicianship,” shaped by early experience as a cathedral chorister and instrumentalist. They regularly perform with early and contemporary music ensembles in Canada and internationally, including the Tallis Scholars, Dame Emma Kirkby, Charles Daniels, and the London Handel Players.
Bronwyn has contributed their voice to several projects for the National Film Board of Canada and appears on Juno-nominated albums, such as Four Thousand Winter with Theatre of Early Music and Trinity Choir. Their twenty years of experience as a church musician continue to inform their creative and scholarly work, particularly through collaborations with contemporary Canadian composers such as Tim Brady, Gabriel Dharmoo, Matthew Larkin, and Andrew Ager.
Their current research explores the Anglican choral tradition for children in Canada, examining how professionalization, musical pedagogy, and gendered performance interact with the voice. Bronwyn’s artistic and academic practice reflects a deep commitment to exploring the intersections between voice, tradition, and identity.
